Verdict – Star Wars: The Old Republic Review Score 7.5 / 10
Our star wars the old republic review scores SWTOR 7.5 / 10. The class campaigns – eight fully-voiced storylines that interlock with the broader galaxy arc – are still some of BioWare’s best writing. The combat is dated by 2026 standards and the F2P tier is restrictive enough that most players will want at least one month of subscription.
Combat – Classic Tab-Target
SWTOR combat is classic tab-target with a global cooldown and an ability bar. By 2026 standards the feel is dated – animations have decent timing but the GCD-bound responsiveness lags modern MMORPGs. Each Advanced Class has a distinct kit and the talent system supports several viable builds.
The game shines when combat sits in the background of a story moment – dialogue cuts, cinematic combat sequences, lightsaber duels with named enemies. It is a BioWare game first and an MMO second, and that ordering is the right way to enjoy it.
Class Stories and Galaxy Expansion Arcs
SWTOR’s headline feature is the eight class story campaigns. Each takes 30-50 hours and delivers a full BioWare-quality narrative – Sith Inquisitor and Imperial Agent remain franchise highlights even among single-player BioWare games. Past the class stories, the planetary expansions (Knights of the Fallen Empire, Knights of the Eternal Throne, Onslaught, Legacy of the Sith and beyond) form a single connected galaxy arc.
Endgame – Operations, Flashpoints, PvP
Endgame is the weakest part of SWTOR. Operations (raids) are present and have well-designed mechanics but the cadence of new content is slow. Flashpoints (dungeons) and Warzones (8v8 PvP) carry the weekly content list. Most long-term players are here for the story refreshes more than competitive endgame.
Monetisation – F2P with Real Paywalls
SWTOR can be played for free up to level 60, but the F2P tier carries restrictions – reduced XP, locked operations and flashpoints, limited character slots and chat throttling. Preferred status (after a single small purchase) lifts the worst restrictions; the full Subscriber tier (around USD 14.99 / month) is what most committed players run.
The Cartel Market (cosmetics, mounts, packs) is essentially a loot-box system on packs, which we flag honestly. None of it sells direct combat power.
Performance and Platform
SWTOR is PC-only and runs on a HeroEngine fork that is showing its age. Performance is good on modern hardware – 144 FPS at 1440p is trivially achievable. CPU single-thread performance still matters more than GPU.
Who Should Play SWTOR
Play it if: you want voiced class campaigns, you are a Star Wars fan or you enjoy BioWare RPG writing.
Skip it if: you want modern combat feel or active endgame progression. WoW covers active PvE; FFXIV covers story plus PvE.
