Verdict – New World Aeternum Review Score 7.1 / 10
Our new world aeternum review for 2026 scores the game 7.1 / 10. The relaunch reworks gear progression, opens cross-platform play and dramatically improves the new-player experience. The endgame loop is still the weakest element relative to the genre leaders.
Combat – Action Hitboxes and Weapon Mastery
New World uses action combat with real hitboxes – blocks, dodges and active aiming. The weapon mastery trees replace traditional classes; you spec a sword and shield for tanking, a hatchet and musket for hybrid melee-ranged DPS, or a life staff and ice gauntlet for support. Weapon-swapping in combat is fluid and the abilities feel weighty.
The combat is the strongest part of the game next to crafting. It is not Black Desert’s animation cancel feast but it is well above average for the MMORPG category.
World and Open-World PvP
The Aeternum continent is a single contiguous landmass – no zone instances – with three factions competing for territory. Open-world PvP is opt-in (the PvP flag system) and territory wars between factions are the headline conflict events. They are well-designed but rare; most players will go days without engaging directly in PvP.
The world is gorgeous and the art direction is more grounded and realistic than most MMO worlds. If you valued the high-fantasy visuals of FFXIV or BDO, Aeternum may feel quieter; if you enjoyed the natural-world feel of older RPGs, it will land well.
Crafting Depth and Endgame Loop
New World has the deepest crafting system in any modern MMORPG. Every endgame item can be crafted, refined or upgraded. Crafting professions interconnect – the smelter feeds the weaponsmith feeds the engineer – and a serious crafter can supply an entire faction.
The endgame loop outside crafting is thinner. The mutated dungeon system (Mutations) and the Soulwarden expedition track are the headline activities. Both are solid but the cadence of new endgame content lags FFXIV and BDO.
Monetisation – One-Time Purchase Plus Optional Cosmetics
New World: Aeternum is a one-time purchase (around USD 39.99 at the time of this review) with no monthly subscription. The cash shop is cosmetic-only – skins, dyes, transmog items. The DLC pricing for expansions is also reasonable by genre standards.
This is one of the cleanest monetisation models in the MMORPG category and pushes the score upward.
Performance and Console Parity
The relaunch added PS5 and Xbox Series X/S support with full cross-progression and cross-play. Console performance holds 60 FPS at 4K dynamic on PS5 / Series X in most content; large faction wars drop into the 45-50 range. PC performance is excellent – 144 FPS at 1440p on midrange GPUs.
The controller scheme is well-thought-out, with action wheel and weapon-swap shortcuts that do not feel cramped.
Who Should Play New World: Aeternum
Play it if: you enjoy crafting-led MMOs, you want a clean one-time-purchase monetisation model and you appreciate grounded fantasy visuals.
Skip it if: you need a constant stream of new endgame content. FFXIV and Black Desert Online both publish more frequent content updates.
