Verdict – Guild Wars 2 Review Score 8.7 / 10
Our guild wars 2 review scores the game 8.7 / 10. Horizontal progression, an active open world, and the strongest sub-free monetisation model in the genre make GW2 our top pick for players who do not want a monthly bill. The Janthir Wilds expansion landed with one of the strongest leveling experiences in the franchise.
Combat – Dodge-Roll Tab-Target Hybrid
Combat in Guild Wars 2 is unusual. It is technically tab-target but ability skillshots, the universal dodge mechanic, weapon-swap rotations and the active stowing system create a much more action-oriented feel than the description suggests. Every class swaps between two weapon sets in combat, and the weapon you have equipped changes your skill bar.
Elite specializations – one per expansion – give each class third and fourth weapon options and reshape the playstyle. The Mirage from Path of Fire still has the most satisfying combo identity in the game.
Horizontal Progression and Open-World Events
Guild Wars 2’s defining design choice is horizontal progression. The level cap is 80; once you hit it (which takes 20-40 hours), gear progression flattens to a single tier of exotic and ascended pieces. New expansions add mastery systems, mount types, fishing, jade tech and other lateral capabilities rather than raising the gear treadmill.
The open world is filled with dynamic events. Maps cycle meta-events that gather entire zones for shared encounters – the Dragon’s End meta and the Wizard’s Tower from recent expansions are some of the best open-world content in the genre.
Endgame – Raids, Strikes, Fractals, WvW
Endgame has four distinct pillars. Raids (10-player) carry mechanically demanding boss fights. Strike Missions are bite-sized boss encounters with three difficulty tiers. Fractals are short instanced dungeons with weekly progression. World vs World (WvW) is the long-running three-faction PvP siege system that has its own dedicated playerbase.
Each pillar has its own reward track and you can absolutely main one without touching the others.
Monetisation – Buy Once, No Sub
Guild Wars 2 uses a buy-to-play model. The Core game is free; expansions are one-time purchases (typically USD 25-35 each). No monthly subscription, no power purchases. The Gem Store offers cosmetics, shared inventory slots, character slots and convenience items. Gems can be earned in-game with gold, which means a patient player can unlock most cash-shop items without paying.
Performance and Platform
Guild Wars 2 is PC-only. Performance is generally good but CPU single-threaded performance bottlenecks large open-world meta-events. A modern CPU paired with a midrange GPU holds 60-90 FPS in most content; large WvW battles can dip to 40s when 50+ players collide.
The game has not been ported to console and ArenaNet has not signalled plans to do so.
Who Should Play Guild Wars 2
Play it if: you want a buy-once MMORPG, you value horizontal progression and you enjoy open-world meta-events.
Skip it if: you need a subscription-driven content cadence or a console release. World of Warcraft covers that brief better.
